The short version

This summary is here to be useful, not to replace the rest. Where it and the full policy differ, the full policy governs.

1Who we are

Dating Diaries, Inc. ("Dating Diaries," "we," "us") is a Delaware corporation in the United States. We operate the Dating Diaries mobile application and the website at datingdiaries.app (together, the "Service").

For data protection purposes, we are the controller of the personal information described in this policy.

You can reach us any time at .

2What this policy covers

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what rights you have over it. It applies to the app, the website, and anything else that links to it.

A note on timing. The Dating Diaries app is launching shortly. Right now the website collects waitlist sign-ups only. This policy describes both, so that what we say and what we do stay the same from day one.

3Information about other people

Dating Diaries is unusual, and we'd rather be straightforward about it than bury it.

Our users record information about other people — the people they're dating, or thinking about dating. Those people aren't our users. They haven't signed up, and in most cases they don't know the Service exists.

So here's how we handle it.

You're responsible for what you record

When you write something about someone, that's your decision. We process it in order to give you the Service. We don't verify it, and it isn't our statement about anyone.

We limit what we do with it

Information about third parties is used only to provide features to the user who entered it. We don't build advertising profiles about them, we don't sell it, we don't use it to contact them, and we don't cross-reference it between accounts to assemble a picture of any individual.

Those people still have rights

If someone believes information about them is held in the Service, they can write to . Depending on where they live, we may be required to give them access to it, correct it, or delete it — and in some cases we may have to tell the user who recorded it that a request was made.

Please be fair

These aren't only house rules — they're conditions of using the Service, and they're set out in our Terms of Service.

4What we collect

4.1 Information you give us about yourself

4.2 Information you give us about other people

4.3 Information the Service generates

The Service produces its own assessments — behavioural flags, scores, written analysis. These are automated inferences produced by software. They are not statements of fact about anyone, they can be wrong, and they should not be relied on as fact.

4.4 Information collected automatically

4.5 Website and waitlist

If you join the waitlist we collect your name and email address, and we use them only to tell you when the app is available and to send you occasional updates. You can unsubscribe from any email.

4.6 What we don't collect

We do not collect precise GPS location, your contacts, photos beyond the ones you deliberately upload, or information from other apps on your device.

5Sensitive information

Some of what you write in Dating Diaries is treated as sensitive personal information under laws including the California Privacy Rights Act and the UK and EU GDPR — in particular anything revealing your sex life or sexual orientation, and the contents of messages between you and someone who isn't us.

We collect it because it's inherent to what the Service does, and only where you choose to enter it. We use it solely to provide the features you asked for.

We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for any purpose other than those permitted under applicable law, and we do not use it to infer characteristics about you for advertising. Under the CPRA you have the right to limit our use of it — see Your rights.

6How we use information

If you're in the UK or EU, the right-hand column is the legal basis we rely on.

PurposeLegal basis (UK/EU)

Generating the AI analysis you ask forPerformance of a contract
Sharing lists with friends you choosePerformance of a contract

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not use your diary content to train third-party AI models.

7AI processing

The Service uses third-party large language model providers to generate its analysis. When you use those features, the relevant content is sent to that provider so it can produce a response.

8Who we share information with

Your friends

Only what you actively choose to share. You control which lists are shared, with whom, and which individual entries. You can revoke sharing at any time — though people who have already seen something can't un-see it, and we can't control what they do outside the Service.

Service providers

We use vendors to run the Service. They act on our instructions, are bound by contract, and may not use your information for their own purposes. The categories are:

CategoryWhat they do
Cloud hosting & databaseStore and serve your data
AI providersGenerate the analysis you request
PaymentsProcess subscriptions (Apple, Google, and our processor)
Analytics & crash reportingTell us what's broken and what's used
Email deliverySend account and waitlist emails
Customer support toolingHandle your messages to us
Engineering contractorsBuild and maintain the Service, including a development partner based in India

We'll provide the current list of named sub-processors on request.

Legal and safety

Where we're required by law, or where we reasonably believe it's necessary to protect the rights or safety of any person.

Business transfers

If the company is acquired, merges, or sells assets, information may transfer as part of that — subject to this policy. We'll tell you before your information becomes subject to a materially different policy.

We do not share your information with advertisers, data brokers, or other dating services.

9International transfers

We're based in the United States and your information is processed there. Some of our service providers operate elsewhere, including India.

If you're in the UK, EU, Canada or Australia, that means your information is transferred internationally. Where we transfer information out of the UK or EEA we rely on appropriate safeguards — Standard Contractual Clauses, or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum — together with additional technical and contractual measures. You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards in place.

10How long we keep information

WhatHow long
Your account and its contentsWhile your account is open
Content you deleteRemoved from the Service immediately; purged from backups within 30 days
Closed accountsDeleted within 30 days
Information about third partiesDeleted when you delete it, or when your account closes
Records we must keep by lawAs long as the relevant law requires — typically tax and payment records for 7 years
Waitlist sign-upsUntil you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you

You can delete individual entries, individual people, or your whole account at any time from inside the app.

11Security

We use encryption in transit and at rest, access controls that limit who on our side can see what, and regular review of our systems.

No system is perfectly secure, and we can't promise absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we'll notify you and the relevant authorities as the law requires.

You can help: use a strong, unique password, and don't share your account.

12Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

How to exercise them

Most of this is in the app under Settings. For anything else, email . We'll verify it's really you — usually by confirming control of your account email — and respond within 30 days, or sooner where the law requires. There's no charge, and we won't treat you differently for asking.

If we say no

You can appeal. Reply to our response with the word Appeal, and a different person will review it and write back within 45 days. If we still say no, you can complain to your state Attorney General or your data protection regulator.

Authorised agents

You can use an authorised agent to make a request. We'll ask for written proof of their authority and may ask you to confirm it directly.

13Depending on where you live

California

Under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA, you have the rights listed above, including the right to know, delete, correct, opt out of sale or sharing, and limit use of sensitive personal information.

In the past 12 months we have not sold or shared personal information as those terms are defined, and we have not knowingly done so for anyone under 16. We collect the categories of information described in Section 4, from you and from your device, for the purposes in Section 6, and disclose them to the service-provider categories in Section 8.

California residents also have the right, under the "Shine the Light" law, to request information about disclosures to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes. We make no such disclosures.

Other US states

If you live in Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana or another state with a comprehensive privacy law, you have equivalent rights of access, correction, deletion, portability and opt-out, plus the right to appeal described above. We do not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising or profiling with legal effects.

United Kingdom and European Union

Your rights arise under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR. You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK, or to your national supervisory authority in the EU.

Canada and Australia

Your rights arise under PIPEDA and the Australian Privacy Principles respectively.

14Cookies and tracking

Our website uses only what it needs to work, plus basic privacy-respecting analytics that tell us how many people visited and which pages they read. We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't run third-party ad trackers.

The app doesn't use cookies, but does use your device's standard app-storage and, if you allow it, push notifications. You can turn notifications off in your device settings at any time.

We honour Global Privacy Control signals where your browser sends them.

15Children

The Service is for adults aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and you must not record information about anyone under 18.

If we learn we've collected information from or about a minor, we'll delete it. If you think that's happened, tell us at .

16Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy as the Service changes. The date at the top always tells you when it last changed.

If a change is material, we'll tell you in the app or by email at least 14 days before it takes effect, so you have time to decide what you want to do.
